![]() ![]() The plot is a bit unfocused and lacks a central antagonist, even while being an interesting character study of Batman and his supporting cast. While some elements of the story transcend the cultural milieu in which it was written or are even ahead of their time, others are incredibly dated. Along with Alan Moore’s Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns helped usher in a new era of gritty, dark comics across the board, and helped distance the character of Batman from the lingering memories of Adam West.* It’s a seminal piece of comic book history, a must-read for any fan of the Dark Knight, and one of the best Batman stories ever written. The book regularly appears on or even tops lists of the most influential comics of all time, and has strongly impacted the on-screen portrayal of the titular Dark Knight ever since its publication in 1986. It’s too simple to ascribe this sick man’s suicide to his failure to find a publisher, but there’s no denying that Toole’s tragedy is compounded by the fact that he never knew how much A Confederacy of Dunces would come to mean to the world. By the time he died aged just 31, Toole had also been unable to hold down his teaching job and had become erratic in his behaviour, as well as increasingly dishevelled and paranoid. I’ll always remember the part of the story when Cassie flies through the sky, imagining the lights on the George Washington Bridge as her sparkly, diamond necklace. (The asphalt roof made it “tar beach.”) While the parents would play cards with friends, Cassie would lie on a mattress, look up at the stars, and imagine she could fly. Instead, her mother, father, and little brother would go up to the roof of their apartment building to escape the summer heat inside. Because the story is set in the early 1930s when public beaches were segregated, Cassie’s family couldn’t go to the area beaches. In Tar Beach, the artist tells the story of an eight-year-old girl named Cassie Lightfoot, who lives in Harlem with her family. I vividly recall a wonderful exhibit at that museum called Tar Beach, which was based on Ringgold’s story quilt and her book of the same name (which is available in the VMFA Shop).
